Text description provided by the architects. The relocation of Sant Antoni Sunday Market needed a site located near the old Market, which is nowadays being refurbished by our office.
Only hosting a sales area one morning a week, it was needed to put in place reversible solutions that do not alter the space in its weekly configuration.
These assumptions lead to consider the covering of the central road of Urgell Street, which is closed to traffic every Sunday and keeps its intensive traffic role the rest of the days. In order to safeguard the Sunday activity we covered the central area of the street with a light roof, supported by arcades on the sidewalks.
The structure is permanent, but there is a partially retractable roof that can reduce its surface during weekdays and increase the coverage to the market stalls on Sundays.
The structure is always situated above 4.50 meters in height, to respect the required gauge in this type of urban roads.
Under the roof we provided a maintenance gateway containing the engines for retractable panels and projectors that enhance the lighting of the street, which can be replaced without interrupting the traffic.
